My process:
I have always expressed my eternal love for colour in every single facet of my life and in every corner of my world. From my vibrant hair, lively approach to clothing and vivid decorating style; colour is a true extension of me that naturally radiates from my paintings. It truly is how I see the world. Not only do I paint as a way to escape to that world but I can manipulate the colours on the canvas and literally create that bold space for my striking creations to thrive. Sharing my love of colour and how it informs my wild creations is an authentic passion.
I feel at times my work has a limited audience but it engages people from all walks of life. Those who are not only seeking a pop of rich colour, expression, and ingenuity but also love a creative approach to rendering animals, nature and want dynamic energy captured through brush strokes.
Most of my artwork is acrylic paint on canvas or cradled boards. Occasionally I will coat with resin to bring a piece to life, allowing it to leap from the wall and into the imagination of the viewer. I use incredibly vibrant colours and confident bold strokes with realistic detail layered throughout. I consider what I do to be a unique combination of linear and painterly styles ( workflows I consider uniquely my own), which bring my work a distinctive vibe that are difficult to duplicate.
I often begin with red or black, sometimes lush purple underpainting and then sketch my subject. Once I feel that I have captured the image I confidently apply paint building up the background around the sketch followed by my spirited colour palette to the piece, using usually one brush for most of the creation. As I layer the paint profile to the subject it begins to take on a life of its own. The piece informs me as much as I do it and together the subject springs to life as it loses some of its two dimensional feel. It is not impasto, there is no heavy building of texture but the colours give the complimentary impression that suggests my work has clever depth and dimension. With vibrant and intense colours, I feel that I convey to the viewer what I truly see in my minds’ eye. Lights and darks are no longer just highlights and shadows; they tell the story of my lively imagination and the wonderful creatures that populate it.
In the end I yearn for my work to be viewed as a delicious meeting of Expressionism and Impressionism with a large serving imagination and colour, my passion translates into an emotion that brings my varied audience together to equally enjoy my works of art.
